UNPARALLELED EXPERTISE
At Wellworth, our team brings over a century of collective experience in healthcare, spanning across a wide variety of specialties, from emergency medicine to mental health and care for the aging. Our team has been in the trenches — whether that’s staying overnight in hospitals during crises, working with severely ill patients, or navigating the intricacies of behavioral health. We leverage this experience to help clients of family offices and wealth advisors receive the best possible care. Here are some of the key insights our team has gained:
Youmna Nafady, LMSW
While working in inpatient mental health settings, one of the psychiatrists I worked with always said that no identical diagnoses are the same, meaning two individuals can have the same diagnosis but can be treated entirely differently. So, deeply assessing the patient is essential as no symptoms of the same diagnosis are the same. This helped me look at mental health treatment so differently because things are never just “textbook.” Each person varies, and each person will require a personalized approach and treatment.
Jessica Fleischer-Black, MD
Two things to remember:
Don’t willingly go to the ER of a hospital you wouldn't want to be admitted to.
Don't expect urgent care to handle your case if you have a complex medical history.
John F. Wheary, DO, MBA, FACEP
When it comes to cancer care, or any specialty care for that matter… Remember that the entire medical team matters — not just the doctor but every individual member of the team. What makes a doctor or a facility “the best?” What criteria is used to determine the best? Is it the most prolific researcher, the biggest hospital, or the highest ranked facility based upon a variety of criteria? Patients and families need to ask “Where is the best place for me? Where will I get the best care for my situation? Where will I experience the best outcome? The best care often comes from cohesive teams who work well together, perform procedures frequently, and have patient outcomes backed by data. It comes down to the best team for each individual patient’s unique situation. Don’t just rely on a name-brand hospital; it's about the skill and coordination of the team, the details, the little things, the things that happen before, during, and after your care.
John Samuels, MPH
I once saw an emergency department chair give a casual knee exam in a hospital hallway. He reluctantly examined the patient without a proper workup, and two weeks later, that patient was in a cast due to a missed injury. It’s a reminder that every patient deserves a full, thorough evaluation. Skipping steps, even for a prominent hospital board chair, can lead to worse outcomes. Don’t cut corners on care.
Beverly Shenkman, MA, M.ED
If one person in a family is addicted, then the entire family is addicted: Intervention needs to be a collaborative effort on the part of the family, not just the individual with the apparent problem.
Sandie Worthington, CBIS
When it comes to care, especially brain injuries and many other diagnoses... if you've seen one, you've seen one. The truth is, the needs and outcomes are different for every individual and should be treated that way. Also, I always tell caregivers to take care of themselves, too. It is not being "selfish" to take a break and do something nice for yourself (go for a walk, exercise, meditate, go to the spa, go home and sleep in your bed). But most importantly, ask for help and accept help when offered. If the caregiver doesn't take care of his/herself, they will not be able to care for someone else.
Christine Richmond, LMSW
I have found over and over that social work departments at local hospitals are a terrific resource for finding services in areas I am not as familiar with. When I need a great private home care provider, clinical resources, and other programs for seniors, etc, a call with a social worker from a hospital is a great way to bypass a google search and other time-consuming research. These professionals have always been willing to share their go-to providers with me and often offer other useful advice. And I make a great local connection to boot.
